What is the average penis size?

If you believe the stories among your buddies, you could well assume that the average penis size is well over 20 centimeters and can only fit into boxer shorts with difficulty. You are probably aware that the reality is somewhat different. We’ll show you what’s fact and what’s fiction based on a current and representative study.

Structure of the study

The study is a meta-study. This means that many different studies on the subject of penis size were evaluated and summarized to determine a meaningful value for the average penis size. A total of 15,521 men whose penis length and girth were measured in both a flaccid and erect state took part in the evaluated studies. Only studies in which the measurement was carried out by medical professionals and not by the test subjects themselves were taken into account.

How was the penis measured?

A total of five different measurement methods were used to determine and evaluate penis size. Three of them were in the flaccid and two of them in the erect state.

• the flaccid penis length (hanging and stretched) and the erect penis length were measured from the pubic bone to the tip of the glans
• the flaccid and erect penis circumference was measured either at the base of the penis or at the thickest part of the penis shaft, but not at the glans

Result: What is the average penis size?

The average penis is 9.16 centimeters long when flaccid and hanging and has a circumference of 9.31 centimeters. The average stretched length of the flaccid penis is 13.24 centimeters.

The two measurements for the erect penis are particularly interesting. In other words, the erect penis length and the erect penis girth. After all, this is the size of the penis that is decisive during sex and by which “man” is defined.

The erect penis is on average 13.12 cm long and has a circumference of 11.66 cm.

How to measure the length of your erect penis

In the study, the length of the erect penis was measured using the BPEL method. BPEL stands for Bone-Pressed-Erect-Length and means that the ruler is pressed directly above the base of the penis up to the pubic bone for measurement. This method is the most accurate way of measuring the erect penis length. With this measuring method, the “whole” erect penis is measured. This includes the part of the penis that is covered by the abdominal fat layer. The measurement is taken by holding the fully erect penis at a 90 degree angle to the body. With the other hand, the ruler is now placed on the top of the penis, pressed onto the pubic bone and a measurement is taken from the pubic bone to the tip of the glans.

This is how you measure:

1. stimulate your penis until it is fully erect
2. place the ruler/ruler stick lengthwise on your penis
3. push the ruler as far as possible into your body until you encounter a hard resistance, which is your pubic bone. Make sure that you press the ruler on the pubic bone and not under the pubic bone
4. measure the distance from your pubic bone to the tip of your glans

How to measure the thickness of your erect penis

The study used the EG measurement method for penis girth. EG stands for erect-girth and means erect penis circumference. It can be measured at three different points: Base, Mid and Top. The penis girth is usually measured directly at the base of the penis. The thickest part of the shaft or the widest part of the glans can also be used to determine the girth of the penis. A measuring tape is wrapped around the corresponding area of the penis. In the study, the penis was measured either directly at the base of the penis or in the middle of the penis. Measurements were not taken at the glans.

This is how you measure:

1. stimulate your penis until it is fully erect
2. wrap the measuring tape around the base of the penis (EGbase), around the thickest part of the penis shaft (EGmid) and around the thickest part of the glans (EGtop) so that it fits tightly but does not cut into the penis
3. measure the number at the point where the measuring tape overlaps. This measurement is your EGbase measured at the base of the penis, your EGmid measured at the thickest part of the penis shaft and your EGtop measured at the glans

Is my penis normal size?

The study is appropriately titled “Am I normal?”. A question you may have already asked yourself. Because if you find out from stories and reports from friends or on the internet that all the other men around you supposedly have a much larger penis, this can lead to self-doubt, discomfort and even erectile dysfunction.

This study clearly shows that it is not normal to have a penis that is 20 centimetres long and 15 centimetres thick. Such enormous specimens are rather a rarity and are found in at most one in a thousand men.

A “normal” penis is therefore around 11 to 18 cm long when erect and has a circumference of between 9 and 14 cm. 95% of all men have a penis in this size range. Penises above or below this size range are very rare and can only be measured in one percent of the male population at most.

Of course, this does not mean that your penis is abnormal just because it is larger or smaller than average. In general, there is no such thing as normal or non-normal. It is always normal if you feel comfortable with it.
